First Grade Syllabus – September/October 2017 Dear Parents and Guardians, Below is the syllabus for September and October, which lists the learning goals for each curriculum area that the students are expected to master. You will receive a progress report with your child’s proficiency level for each subject area at the end of the instructional period.
Reading • I can identify who is telling a story. • I can make self-to text connections and text-to-text connections. • I can discuss a story’s message. • I can answer questions about key details. • I can make wondering statements about.
Writing • I can use sight words and phonics skill to write complete sentences. • I can write a small moment narrative that tells two or more events. • I can edit my writing with adults and peers.
Math • I can use pictures and objects to solve adding to and putting together addition problems. • I can understand what happens when I add zero to a number. • I can understand why addends can be added in any order. • I can use pictures and objects to solve taking from and taking apart subtraction problems. • I can use pictures and models to compare and subtract numbers. • I can easily use subtraction facts within 10.
Science • I can identify living and nonliving things. • I can identify similarities and differences between living and nonliving things. • I can discuss how scientists learn by observing tools. • I can explain what all living things need • I can compare and contrast different animal groups
Social Studies • I can describe what it means to be a good citizen. • I can list some rules and explain why rules need rules. • I can describe a neighborhood, including common places. • I can describe community helpers and their jobs. • I can name a Peace Builder from Brooklyn (Magnet Study).
